Question: The time of my last period was the 17 of July and started bleeding on the 20th of Sept. Pressure went high, started bleeding still not stopped, have been admitted in hospital, doctors have done ultrasound, says its normal. What’s my chances of miscarry? R.B. (UK)
Answer: You started vaginal bleeding at around 9 weeks of gestation by your dates. As a general guide, threatened miscarriage, which this is, has a 90% chance of successful resolution. That means, there is around a 1 in 10 chance that you will miscarry.
The fact that miscarriage has not happened despite several days of bleeding is actually a good sign. It means your chances of carrying on normally are pretty good. However, whilst the bleeding is still going on, it has to be treated as a case of threatened miscarriage. Does hospital admission or bed rest have any value in this situation? No. I hope it all works out well for you.
